These are the days When your good graces have left and gone You’re left counting the ways That I’ve done you wrong They’re gonna hang me high For my crimes I’ve got nothing to lose now But these tears I’m crying It’s high time that I paid the price So that the next time maybe I’ll think twice Does it matter to you, girl To know that I’m in misery? These are the days When your good graces have left and gone You’re left counting the ways That I’ve done you wrong It’s five o’clock in the morning And I’m not home I’m surrounded by people But I’m really alone I know I’m keeping you waiting, girl But I don’t care I’d come running to you If I weren’t tied to this chair I’m so tired of hiding, baby And getting wrapped up in lies These are the days When your good graces have left and gone You’re left counting the ways That I’ve done you wrong

about

“I just wanted to be honest about everything, from my musical influences to my story,” muses Neal Francis. After years of dishonest living—consumed by drugs, alcohol, and addiction—such sincerity is jarring from the 30-year-old Chicago-based musician. Liberated from a self-destructive past and born anew in sobriety, Francis has captured an inspired collection of songs steeped in New Orleans rhythms and Chicago blues. His music evokes a bygone era of R&B’s heyday while simultaneously forging a new path on the musical landscape. Ohio-based Karma Chief Records (a subsidiary of Colemine Records) will release two songs, “These Are The Days” and “Changes, Pt. 1,” in early 2019.

There is a deep connection between Francis’s childhood—his obsession with boogie woogie piano, his father’s gift of a dusty Dr. John LP—and the songs he’s created. The influences are unmistakable: the vocal stylings of Allen Toussaint and Leon Russell; the second line rhythms of The Meters and Dr. John; the barroom rock ‘n’ roll of The Rolling Stones; the gospel soul of Billy Preston. Francis pays tribute to the masters but has his own story to tell: “It’s the life I’ve lived so far.”

Neal Francis Chicago, Illinois

Neal Francis’ sophomore album ‘In Plain Sight’ offers up a body of work both enchanting and painfully self-aware, recorded entirely on tape with his bandmates. Mixed by Grammy Award-winner Dave Fridmann (Spoon, Tame Impala, Flaming Lips), the album spotlights Francis’s refined yet free-spirited performance on piano, an instrument he took up at the age of four. ... more
